306 So let us make an effort to keep an open, receptive mind at least part of the time; and when our mental telephone bell rings just lift the receiver quietly, and impartially accept the impressions coming to us. This does not mean sitting idly in meditation, waiting with folded hands for some great thought to come to us out of the universal storehouse; but that we should continue normally about our daily lives.
305 I believe the telephone makes a very understandable illustration for the exchange of impressions . . which, of course, is operable telepathy. Remember, we have stressed the importance of an open, receptive mind; and mind, like the telephone, is a two-way instrument. If we keep our minds continually occupied with consciously sending out thoughts, any impressions coming to us will receive the "busy signal" and be turned away. The connection between mind and mind cannot be completed, because the frequencies of the incoming impression cannot get past the thought vibrations our own mind is broadcasting.
304 In developing telepathy as a means of communication, remember impressions work from mind to mind; and distance is no barrier. As we first begin to use this universal language, we will find it easier to exchange impressions with a few chosen individuals until confidence is gained. With all parties working in sympathy a certain wave length can be established between them; making it possible for them to communicate much as radio "hams" talk back and forth around the world.
303 A very good example of this may be found in the way many of our scientific discoveries are made almost simultaneously in separate parts of the world. Working independently, and often unaware of the research the other is doing along the same line, each scientist actually tunes in on the same thought vibration of universal knowledge; (the same as any number of people can tune in on a radio program).
302 "Of course not," he answered without hesitation; then grinned, sheepishly. "Now I understand what you mean," he said, and sat down. The voices were audible to him, but not to those around him. Yet, if a person were to tune in on the same thought frequency he, too, would receive the same thought.
301 Now the question will arise: How is conversational privacy possible under these circumstances? I believe a good illustration of this occurred during a lecture I once gave. I had just finished explaining how the images and voices came silently to the mind, when a man in the audience rose and interrupted, saying he heard voices speaking distinctly. He was very insistent that these were audible, and his reception was not in the least silent. I then asked him, "If I were standing beside you, would I hear the same voices?"
300 The secret of what is termed "direct transference" from one individual to another, is simply that with the thought projected the sender incorporates the image of the person he has chosen as recipient. A million people might receive the thought, but because it does not pertain to their personal affairs, they will let it pass through their minds unnoticed. But the chosen recipient will recognize his image in the thought, and direct his attention toward its perfect reception.
299 We find that in the case of thought, like the spark of light, vibrations proceed outwardly from it in all directions. We can tune in on any radiation of that impression, and receive the full thought. Therefore, contrary to current belief it is not possible to transmit a thought directly to any one individual, to the exclusion of everyone else! For inasmuch as mind, the medium of thought transmission, permeates the whole of space and form, there is no place where a thought vibration is excluded.
298 The human instrument, or mind, may receive thought vibrations corresponding to its own thought-habit; but may be totally oblivious of vibrations of another nature. Thus, we perceive, it is necessary to develop a universal interest if we are to become unlimited telepathic recipients.
297 Some individuals find they receive only telepathic communications of a dire nature; while others receive beautiful visions of a more universal expression. This difference in quality of receptivity can be explained by the fact that the relative vibrations of each person is different. (In speaking of relative vibrations here, I mean to denote the thought-habit of the individual.) And since it is not possible to receive a vibration to which we are not attuned, we will attract those sympathetic to our habitual thought pattern. Remember, when the violin is not properly tuned it will not respond to the sound frequency of the other instrument.
296 The human form, in a natural state of impersonal relaxation, is receptive to all vibrations. Of course, it must be freed from habit action, the sense-man must be controlled, and the ego, or intense concentration upon its basic vibrations, must be relaxed. Telepathy comes as an impression through the feeling channel; and when we control our reasoning mind (or the ego), we can receive impressions from all phases of manifestation: for we are a unit with them.
295 The basic vibration of any form is a constant thing; otherwise, the cell would not always reproduce its kind. But so far as the cell's activity and capability of transmitting impressions is concerned, it is unlimited in a relative, or natural state. It is this relative activity with which we are dealing in the study of telepathy; and it may be referred to as the sympathetic vibration. This sympathetic vibration can be demonstrated by using two violins exactly attuned. When we pluck the string of one, the other violin will respond in the same key. A similar experiment may be performed with ordinary drinking glasses, but these are limited in their vibratory range.
294 It became quite a game with my friends to place a tasty titbit in the center of the table, well out of reach of the little dog. The family would then pretend complete indifference to the action of the animal, who would circle the table, sampling the air. When he was assured his nose was not deceiving him, he would trot off to find the cat. Upon locating her sleeping curled up in a chair, he would nudge her awake and silently obviously converse with her. She would rise, stretch, and stalk across the room. One nimble leap would carry her to the center of the table, where she would pick up the morsel in her mouth and drop it to the waiting dog. Her task performed, the cat would resume her interrupted nap, while the dog chewed contentedly on the stolen food. This was no coincidence, for it so delighted the owners that they had the animals repeat it frequently for interested friends. In this case the dog and cat, different species of the animal kingdom, were merely using the universal language which is natural to all forms of manifestation.
293 For example: We know that different species of the animal kingdom are able to communicate with one another. They do not use a spoken language as we do, but they convey their meaning to each other very clearly. I well remember a little fox terrier and a deaf white cat that belonged to friends of mine. These animals were inseparable companions, and although the cat was as deaf as a post, they often gave positive proof of their ability to commune with each other.
292 We must understand that the human cell has a basic vibratory rate, that naturally responds more easily to other human vibrations than it will to those of animal, plant, or mineral life. But the human cells are just as capable of receiving impressions from all of these phases of nature, as they are from human beings. The same atoms, vibrating at different rates, make up the forms of human, animal, plant and mineral and they all speak the one universal language.
291 On the other hand, the optimist will see the beauty in the drifting snowflakes. He will call your attention to the majesty of the towering clouds, and point out the gratitude of the thirsty ground. These two minds are using the same universal law of action. But one has set his mind in motion along a destructive, vibratory thought-habit pattern; while the other follows a constructive vibratory thought-habit pattern; recognizing all creation as a manifesting expression of the Supreme Intelligence.
290 Remember the illustrations we used of the pessimist and optimist? The pessimist has formed the thought-habit pattern of always looking at the gloomy side of life, and will resist the presentation of joyous ideas. Even though the sun might be shining brightly, if you were to comment on the beauty of the day he would remind you of the terrible storms we had last winter. His thought-habit pattern looks upon all manifestation with suspicion.
289 Psychologically, we express this law by the statement that "a habit is difficult to break." In other words, any thought that is allowed to impress itself upon the body, sets the cells of the body into a state of motion corresponding to the thought-vibration. The body then has a tendency to continue in that particular motion until acted upon by another force which is strong enough, or positive enough, to change that vibration. The highly organized, concentrated, personal ego, in its aggressive manner, is so prone to force-frequencies that it intensifies the natural tendency of matter to continue in any motion, once that motion is created. When we allow habit-motions to become set, it necessitates contact with a very positive vibration to change them.
288 To answer these questions, we must again refer to the universal law of action. The scientific definition of this law is, "Any object set in motion has a tendency to continue in motion in the same line, or direction, until acted upon by some external force."
287 I have said that in general, lack of receptivity is due to lack of interest on the part of the individual. We know that some persons are intensely interested in all that goes on around them, whereas others have limited interests. Why should this be? What causes the psychological difference?
