173 This unnatural condition in the digestive system is the direct consequence of the strong thought vibrations of anger or anxiety impinging upon the body cells, and if continued long enough can cause serious and lasting bodily damage. Science has definitely proved that anxiety and tension can terminate in neurosis, ulcers, etc. So here is evidence that the sense-mind can bring suffering upon itself, the physical man. There is great truth in the saying, "As ye sow, so shall ye reap." for it is applicable not only to our morals, as most people interpret it, but to every facet of our lives.
172 While our minds cannot consciously direct each detail of the complicated workings of the body - we must depend upon nature for this - through our mental attitudes we do wield a tremendous influence over these operations. If we are serene when we eat, the digestive processes are orderly; but if the mind is agitated by thoughts of anxiety or anger, the little cell chemists of the stomach and intestines will be thrown into confusion. This will result in an unbalance in the glands producing the gastric juices, and indigestion will follow. Because the digestive processes were unbalanced, the second group of little chemists, those responsible for controlling the gas, cannot perform their duties properly; and excessive gas will form, often settling around the heart. Since the waste matter was not fully digested, the third group, those responsible for elimination, will be unable to function properly.
171 Every moment of our lives provides us with ample evidence of the intelligence of the body cells. While we go about our daily routine, these busy cells oversee the intricate functionings of our bodies. With no assistance from our conscious mind, they extract the essence of the foods we eat, parcel it out to the various parts of the body in proper proportions, and discard the waste. Admittedly, this is only what we have come to accept as a natural functioning of the body; yet when analyzed, it represents a miracle that man cannot duplicate. Does it not give us a wonderful insight into the workings of nature? And what is Nature but Cosmic Cause expressing Cosmic Intelligence?
170 For instance, living tissue taken from the body of a chicken has been kept alive for years without the aid of brain, spinal cord, or sense organs; not merely preserved but actively growing, or multiplying in cell composition. It is true that this tissue could not continue to live if it were not supplied with proper heat, moisture, and the necessary food; but if the cells of this living tissue were not conscious entities, how could they know how to assimilate the elements provided for their maintenance?
169 Each atom making up the cells of the body possesses within itself the element of feeling-which is consciousness. Consequently, it is quite possible for the cells of one form, to convey the state of their activity to the cells of another form. When the cells of one body are impressed with vibrations from the cells of another body, the impulse is created in the nerve plasm and immediately carried through the afferent nerves to the brain, where it is decoded into a conscious thought. It may be difficult to accept the idea of cells as little conscious entities, capable of receiving and passing on vibratory impressions, or of forming their own messages; but experiments which have taken place in our laboratories have proved conclusively that all substance is possessed of consciousness.
168 This proves that thought can be transmitted from the body cells within a form, without the necessity of passing through the brain of the form as a conscious thought. If thought could only be produced through action of the brain cells, this knowledge could never have been revealed to me; for the woman's brain was broadcasting strong, frantic, thought-vibrations of serious disorder in the body.
167 This lady, still doubtful, went to a heart specialist who confirmed the impression of normal cardiac action I had received from the heart cells. She then visited a dentist, and the information I had received from the cells of her gums was substantiated, for, after taking X-ray pictures, he assured her the infectious condition could easily be cured by a few weeks' treatment.
166 The woman's mind had been deeply impressed with the idea that her heart might falter and stop at any minute, and that her teeth were ulcerated beyond medical help. Remember, these were the thoughts she was holding uppermost in her mind when she consulted me. Yet, I received a definite impression from the heart that the action of that organ was normal; and I could detect the presence of only a slight infection in the cells of the mouth. Therefore, I informed her that her heart was perfectly normal, and there was nothing wrong with her teeth except for a slight infection of the gums, which could be eliminated with proper treatment. I did not acquire this information by visible means, for I am not a doctor and I made absolutely no physical examination. The diagnosis-if you wish to call it that-was the result of thought-transference from her body cells to my mind.
165 A number of years ago an acquaintance who had been feeling unwell, consulted a doctor. The doctor's diagnosis was that she was suffering from a serious heart condition, and that her teeth were so badly infected they would all have to be extracted. Naturally, she was very distressed by the diagnosis; and came to discuss it with me, asking for advise.
164 What has this to do with telepathy? It is a very good illustration explaining one phase of telepathic communion between man and the body cells, or man and nature. Following is another in which I was a participant.
163 Atoms are endowed with alertness or awareness, and through feeling, can impress their messages upon man's mind. For instance, we may be strolling down a lonely road, or hurrying along a busy street; the mind occupied with its own thoughts when, through feeling, we become aware of someone staring at us. As yet the eyes have not seen this person, nor was the preoccupied mind aware of his presence until feeling alerted the brain. It was the cells of our body, responding to the directed thought from the other person, that alerted our mind to his fixed attention upon us. This same alertness can be awakened in us by the gaze of any living form.
162 In man, as in the flower bed, the same atoms merely form new cells. Remember the law of affinity, the action of attracting and repelling, is the foundation of the universe. And these tiny atoms, so complete in themselves, obey unquestioningly the Cosmic Intelligence which, through the Mother principle, Matter, has brought them into being. They do not lose their individual identity, but rather, add one more experience through the new manifestation.
CHAPTER II
Impressions From the Body Cells
161 Some may point to the fact that the cells of the body are constantly changing. How, therefore, is it possible for them to retain their memory?
160 The Living Soul, given to man when the Creator breathed the breath of Life into his nostrils, does carry the True Book of Remembrance; but few who have lived, or are now living on earth, have as yet evolved in understanding to the place where they may read. True, on rare occasions we may be given a glimpse of a word here and there, and with understanding can interpret these correctly. But since most Earthlings have not yet learned sufficient control over the sense-mind, more than a brief glance cannot be vouchsafed them.
159 But to return to the true cell memory; because all manifestation consists of atoms, which, through creation and recreation are used and reused to make forms, the interrelationship between all things is self-evident. The atoms which now make up your physical body, previously contributed to the construction of innumerable other bodies and forms. And like the cells of the dwellings mentioned earlier which were impregnated with the vibrations received from the occupants, the cells of the body will carry memories received from each manifestation.
158 Over the years I have made an interesting observation regarding these "memories." It is indeed rare to find an individual who claims to remember being just plain Mr. Average Citizen. These memories-which in many instances can seem very real-usually involve illustrious persons; everyone from the high priests who officiated at the initiation ceremonies in the Great Pyramid, to more recent characters of history familiar to us all. The vast majority of these are not even cell memories . . . they are simply man exalting his ego.
157 This accounts for most of the so-called memories of previous lives. A person may receive an impression that he once lived on earth as Julius Caesar, and his ego will be inflated. But in reality, a few cells of his body may be composed of atoms which were once present in the body of Caesar.
156 So it is with Man. The atoms of his physical body-made from the "dust," or atoms of matter-have been used and reused throughout eternity. Thus, these miniature universes carry an indelible memory of the experiences they have participated in during each manifestation.
